Extract of a letter from Conservation, Design and Landscape Manager North Norfolk District Council

North Norfolk District Council and Broadland District Council are considering the designation of a Conservation Area at the site of the former RAF Coltishall base and associated residential areas. Both Councils now wish to seek your views and those of other interested parties, prior to a formal decision on Conservation Area designation.

The former RAF Coltishall base has a unique place in history, both locally and nationally. It provides a fascinating insight into changing technology, the development of military aviation and global conflicts. The role of the Royal Air Force can be tracked through six decades of operation. Furthermore, the close relationship between the base and the lives and livelihoods of local people over this period can be clearly distinguished.

In fulfilling their duty to protect areas of special architectural or historic interest, the two Councils seek only to manage change in a sensitive way, to ensure that those special historic qualities and characteristics of the site which led to designation are sustained, reinforced and safeguarded for future generations to appreciate

The site of the former RAF Coltishall is a special heritage asset and its protection and re-use can be both a fitting tribute to our heritage and a future opportunity for community benefit.

So please, let us know your thoughts on the proposed Conservation Area and how, if designated it should be managed in the future.
