COLTISHALL FOOTBALL FIELD

Men's Sunday League Football

Sporting Longdale Football Club recently completed their second season playing on Rectory Road playing field in Coltishall, this was also the 8th season for the club in total. Once again Sporting Longdale had two teams competing in divisions 3a and 4a of the Norwich and District Sunday League.

The Sporting Longdale first team again narrowly missed out on promotion to division 2a by only 2 points finishing fourth in the table with 44 points from their 22 games. A 2 - 2 draw in their opening fixture against the Norfolk Junior County Cup holders and eventual division winners Sprowston Royal Oak set the  tone for what was to be an exciting season for the club.  Sporting Longdale also became the first team to inflict a league defeat on the Dereham based Wellington Pink Uns since their introduction to the Norwich and District Sunday League at the start of the 09/10 season, they then went one better by beating them in the return fixture to become the first side to complete a double against them.

Sporting Longdale kept 7 clean sheets in their first 11 games and with only one defeat after 17 games, Sporting Longdale found themselves top of the table at the end of February with only 5 games remaining. Unfortunately 3 defeats out of the next 4 games dashed Sporting Longdale's hopes of becoming champions and with other results going against them in what turned out to be one of the tightest divisions in the league they slipped to 4th in the table. However a 15 - 0 victory in the last game of the season against already relegated Heartsease Casuals ensured the season ended on a high note with manager Lewis Brady expecting the side to mount another serious title challenge next season.

The 2010/2011 season was Sporting Longdale Reserves second in the league, during the 2009/2010 season they suffered many heavy defeats in what was a tough 1st year for the team. With some new faces in the side the Reserves started strongly winning their opening 2 games of the season. Unfortunately this was then followed by 6 defeats all of which were by only 1 or 2 goals. To the team's credit they won the Norwich and District Sunday League's Sporting Award for the months of September and October, with over 100 teams competing in the league this was no small achievement and reflects the friendly atmosphere that has been created at the club.

The Reserves ended their run of 6 defeats with an impressive 6-0 victory over Temples Propem FC and completed the season suffering only three defeats in their final 12 games, the highlight being their last game against the eventual league champions Riverside Rovers when they became the only side to shut out the potent Riverside Ro\ers attack all season. This marked a huge improvement on last season's 2nd from bottom placed finish including a goal difference of 76 to a respectable 7th place finish with only a 1 goal difference.

Sporting Longdale Football Club is now preparing for the 2011/2012 season and is looking forward to returning to Coltishall on Sunday mornings.

The club is looking for new players to help both teams push for promotion this season. Pre-season training starts Tuesday 5th July 2011, 7.00pm at Sloughbottom Park in Norwich and will continue there until mid-September before moving under floodlights for the winter. If you would like to get involved with the club in anyway please come along to Sloughbottom Park on Tuesday evenings or call Club Secretary Mark Brzeczek 07769 271 078 for further details.
